It seemed that after attacking our armed forces, parliament, markets, temples, historical monuments, modes of transportation, foreign embassies in our country the terroists were running out of targets in our country. But for these bigots nothing is indespensable. They aim to destroy the very fabric of this nation and hence always try to come up with different targets.Hence this time it was the IISc,the foremost institution in research in our country.
It's the epitome of research projects in our country.Any aspiring research scholar would love to do a project in this institution. The IISc is also believed to be involved in several confidential projects for our country.Hence it's comes as no surprise that the terrorists chose to target this institution.Infact this was long time coming. After the different forms attack on our country it seemed that an attack on our defence and research institutions was next. And the terrorists too seemed to have thought the same.
Now I would like to mention an interesting article written by Mr.Raman.Mr Raman is a distinguished bureaucrat and is famous for his insightful but,at times,pro-congress articles. He puts forward a theory which sounds extremely plausible and tangible.
First of all he claims that the recent attacks on Bangalore were motivated by nothing but economic compulsions. He cites similar acts in different parts of the world.Terming it Economic Terroism he feels that the terrorists look upon Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai as economic powerhouses of this country, and feel that striking them could have a negative impact on India's reputation and economy.
As with all terrorist acts and especially those in India even this seems to have a Pakistani connection. He elaborates that the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has been, ever since he came to power, striving hard to diversify Pakistani economy. In this regard he efforts have been aimed at developing the IT industry. However since India is already considered a superpower in this field, the Pakistani IT industry hasn't really taken off.And hence what better way to divert attention to their IT prowess than to discredit the Indian industry by creating security concerns in the minds of the western MNC's.
Now I don't support this theory. But I can't discard it either. After all the Pakistani Govt has always tried matching us in every way as possible and the prolonged Kashmir Dispute is just an indication of the same. The Pakistani Establishment has always used Kashmir as a political ploy and they are quite aware that until the Kashmir dispute is solved India would never be able to achieve complete economic growth.Well the reasons of that will take an entire post and hence I won't dwell too much into that.Coming back to the point,I feel this could very well have been the handiwork of the ISI,a govt in itself, and the quintessential intelligence agency, ruthless and unscrupulous.
But if this was the case not only is it shameful and disgraceful but it also doesn't show Pakistan in good light. After all this isn't the right way to achieve development. But I guess with Pakistan nothing is unexpected. But I request you all not have any fallacies that I am Anti-Pakistan.I neither love nor detest Pakistan but I hate the Pakistani Govt and their ISI.After all I am not sure what happens to the Pakistanis,as long as they are ordinary citizens they love and respect our country but when these very individuals come to power they suddenly start hating our country and consider Kashmir to be an inalienable property of their nation.
Well now that it's obvious(and has always been) that nothing is immune to terrorist attacks it's time the government slashed the number of armed personnel deputed to our politicians, celebrities and corrupt bureaucrats and instead started dispatching them to reputed research and educational institutions in our country. But going by the kind of security provided to our University which IMHO is next only to IIT interms of Technical Excellence, the terrorists won't find it hard breaching our University walls. After all how long will it take to knock out a potbellied constable and a couple of security guards.
P.S:-Ever since our VC has come to power his primary aim has been to convert our campus into a fortess, immune to "western and unethical" activities. It would be advisable that he rather concentrated on making our campus impregnable to terrorists.

Yes, it is a very shocking attack. IISc’s security system could be visible only whenever our President visited the campus. They should get a proper security system, almost like a police station, inside the campus. We used to joke around saying that the cream of researchers are here so what if terrorists attack.. never thought it would happen one day like this.

Height of Cowardice Paurna, they dont have the ability to do such research and they cannot bear us doing it. Even if you set up a police station it is of no use coz the campus is very huge and untamed at many parts to prevent such an attack. May be the vulnerability can be reduced.

Its our terrorist friendly Govt now in Delhi, which is responsible for slaughter of common men, women, attacks on our temples of learning and democracy. I have no word to condemn this UPA Govt.

Hi Paurna,
It’s sort of weird way to introduce myself that I turn out to be a classmate of yours in your college.
I had been in this blog business for 2 and half years now. I chanced upon your blog from Vatsan’s page (I’m a regular reader of his blog). You have got a great blog here and I found your posts to be well researched and written with extreme care, none of the frivolous stuff that people write usually. Keep the good work going and trust me to be a regular reader.

PAAUUURRRNNAA
Heyy
This is gowri shankar here..just mentionin my name incase i turn up as one of those anonymous posters here.
Going through your blog is really giving me an inferiority complex.
This particular article was good.Havent gone through the other posts yet.Give me a few days..that will give me enough time to steal as many ideas from your blog as possible.
P.S.
I was really amused to see security being provided for our college…like any terrorist is really going to attack our college.Iam pretty sure he will be stopped at the entrance itself coz hes probably driving a car and he will he asked to park the vehicle first and after that our VC will probably stop on the way coz he is not in proper dress code. The terrorist will probably walk across the road and go into iit for all the trouble.
December 30, 2005 at 9:42 pm
On a serious note, the attack was just probably just an attempt to scream out thier existence in the loudest possible way.
An attack in kashmir wouldnt have elicited this kind of an response. Most of us tend to ignore the terrorist attacks in kashmir or even if we do pay any attention to it,it would not have made the kind of impact that this news has.
Why Banglore?
Its in the south of the country, a region which is physically and mentally cut off from kashmir and its disturbing events.
Also,For some reason, any untoward incident in banglore gets a lot more publicity than any where else.(This was evident in the rape incident recently)Maybe its because its the IT hub of the nation.
Just my 2 cents.

Raju, hey raju did u go to IISc.if so that’s real cool.but i have a qn if u were at IISc why did u leave and go to US.You could have served our country.Couldn’t u?
January 2, 2006 at 11:58 am
Paurna, I did my MS, PhD and few months of post-doctoral fellowship in IISc.. So, a strong connection.. to spend over 8 years in one campus . I came to US in summer ‘04 to do post-doctorate.. For getting anything good in India (academia or industry), they seek the post-doc exp. from Western world.. We would soon return to India..
January 2, 2006 at 5:54 pm
raju, that’s awesome dude.8 years in the top research institute in our country.hope u finish ur post doc soon and come and serve our country

u r absolutely rite on all accounts dude. I think the politicians should set aside their differences and join hands when it comes to national security. Instead of accusing each other they should co-operate and make this land safe. Personally I think the Indian govt. has been very soft when it comes to dealing with terrorism for the past 53 years. When the US can attack Iraq to provide the so called democracy, why can’t v attack the terrorist camps in POK to save our country. Its high time that v take a firm stand in this issue
